Eremo of Santa Caterina

Overlooking one of the deepest and most fascinating stretches of Lake Maggiore, the Eremo of Santa Caterina del Sasso is a place where history, art and spirituality blend harmoniously in a natural setting of rare beauty. Born from the fusion of three chapels, this ancient monastic complex rises on a sheer rock face above the water, offering a breathtaking view of the Borromean Gulf, Stresa and the enchanting Borromean Islands.

According to legend, it was Alberto Besozzi who founded it in the 12th century to honour St Catherine of Egypt, to whom he turned in prayer during a shipwreck on the lake. The church, embellished with frescoes painted between the 14th and 19th centuries by various artists, preserves a unique iconographic heritage, while the 14th-century bell tower, with its elegant 15-metre-high rectangular structure, completes the imposing profile of the hermitage. Access to the structure is an exciting experience: one can choose to walk up the impressive panoramic staircase or use the modern lift carved into the rock, designed by the Province of Varese. The latter allows everyone, including the elderly and people with disabilities, to reach the hermitage by overcoming a 51-metre difference in height, in total safety and comfort. The Eremo can be reached in just 25 minutes by car from Hotel Villa Borghi.
